The Madeira Firecrest is a very small passerine bird endemic to the island of Madeira. Before it was recognised as a separate species in 2003, it was classified as a subspecies of the Common Firecrest.
It differs from the Common Firecrest by having a bold white eyering rather than the white eyebrow stripe of the Common Firecrest (See: Firecrest).

Blackcap
Zwartkop (female)
Lesvos, Greece
30 April 2010

Like most Sylvia species (see also next 7 species), it has distinct male and female plumages: The male has the small black cap from which the species gets its name, whereas in the female the cap is brown.
The Blackcap is partially migratory; central and northern European breeders winter in southern Europe and north Africa, where the local populations are resident.
The bird on the left is obviously a Great Tit.
