The white morph of the Great Blue Heron, formerly known as the "Great White Heron," is found nearly exclusively in shallow marine waters along the coast of very southern Florida, the Yucatan Peninsula, and in the Caribbean.

The white morph of the Great Blue Heron distinguishes itselves from the Great Egret (next photo) by its yellow legs (instead of black) and its longer neck.

The taxonomy of this bird is still somewhat contentious. Some describe as many as five distinct species; others consider some or all of these to be subspecies. Some refer to the name Black-winged Stilt as the old world nominate species (Himantopus himantopus) and to the name Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) as the species occuring in the Americas.

Greater Yellowlegs
Grote Geelpootruiter

23 November 2012

It is not always easy to distinguish the Greater Yellowlegs from the Lesser Yellowlegs. This time it was easy, because the two species were together (see next photo).

The Greater Yellowlegs has a longer bill (noticeably longer than the head) than the Lesser Yellowlegs (the bill is as long as the head).

Sanderling is characteristicly seen running at shore's edges with rapidly moving feet.
In winter, Sanderling (usually) has a black patch in the shoulder (clearly visible) which lacks with Western Sandpiper. A recently discovered reliable field mark is that Sanderling has a distinguised gape notch ("hook" at the base of the bill), in all plumages; Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers (next photo) donít really show that. Most field guides don't mention this feature.
